Fee impact
Four charges stand between a savings plan and a fee-free version of itself: the entry load, the fund's ongoing charge, the commission per order — and, in Belgium, the product's stock-exchange tax class, which runs from 0.12% to 1.32%.

How this number is reached
The entry load and the commission are taken from each contribution, so only the remainder buys units. The stock-exchange tax is computed by the tax engine on the order amount, per-transaction ceiling included. The ongoing charge is accrued out of the fund's value, so it comes off the return, and the figure reported is what it took year after year.
The reference curve is the identical plan with no charge and no tax at all — nobody can buy it; it exists to give the gap a fixed meaning. The ongoing charge is taken once a year although it accrues continuously, which is the usual approximation. No capital-gains tax is applied here: that is the compound-interest simulator's subject.
Frequently asked questions
What is the ongoing charge (TER)?
The yearly percentage the fund takes out of its own assets to run itself. It appears on no statement: it is deducted from the unit price, and so from the return, before either is reported to you.
Is the entry load charged on every contribution?
Yes, on every subscription. On a monthly plan a 2.5% load applies twelve times a year — and every euro it takes stops earning anything from that day on.
Why does the stock-exchange tax change with the product?
Because the rate follows what the product is: 1.32% for an accumulating class of a Belgian-registered fund, 0.12% for a tracker meeting the EEA criteria, 0.35% for the rest. Eleven times apart on the same amount invested.
What is the "no fees" curve?
Exactly the same plan with no entry load, no ongoing charge, no commission and no tax. It is not for sale anywhere: it is a fixed reference, so the gap shown does not depend on which alternative we chose to compare against.
Where do the comparison table's fees come from?
Two sets of indicative values standing for the two ends of the Belgian market, held in the site's configuration and reviewed like anything else. No institution is named, no rating is given, and this page carries no commercial link.

- Accumulating or distributing S&P 500: the same index, two different tax bills
iShares Core S&P 500 comes as an accumulating class (CSPX) and a distributing one (IUSA). Same index, same cost — but one pays 1.32% TOB and no dividend tax, the other 0.12% TOB and 30% on its dividends. The arithmetic decides which is cheaper.
- Why a very large order pays a lower effective TOB rate
The Belgian stock exchange tax is capped per transaction — €1,300, €1,600 or €4,000. Above the value where the cap bites, the effective rate falls, and splitting one large order into several can cost more, not less.
- Why Bolero and DEGIRO tax the same ETF differently
The same accumulating ETF is charged 1.32% TOB at one Belgian broker and 0.12% at another. The divergence is not a bug — it comes from how each broker reads FSMA registration on an umbrella fund.
