Which Belgian taxes each broker settles for you
The Belgian tax rates are the same whoever holds your account. What changes from one broker to the next is who pays them over for you, and what is therefore still yours to declare.
This is a description, not a ranking. There is no score and no "best" here — what suits you depends on which paperwork you would rather not do, and that is your call to make.
| Broker | Stock exchange tax withheldCharged on every buy and every sell. Where it is not withheld, you file it yourself each month through MyMinfin. | Dividend withholding tax withheldThe 30% on dividends. Where it is not withheld, the gross dividend goes on your annual return. | Capital gains tax withheldThe 10% on gains realised from 2026. Belgian intermediaries withhold it by default from June 2026; a broker running the opt-out system does not. | Belgian tax certificate issuedA statement mapping your year onto Belgian tax lines. Without one you work from a plain activity statement. |

The capital-gains column describes the position from June 2026. The exact start date is one of our open questions: most Belgian sources say 1 June 2026, one says roughly 1 May.
Withholding is not the end of it. The €10,000 annual exemption on capital gains is only ever claimed back through the annual return, whichever broker you are with.

Where each row comes from
- a
- Follows from the confirmed rule for brokers established outside Belgium. We have not read this broker's own wording on this point.
- b
- Reported by a guide or comparison site, not by the broker.
- c
- The broker states this itself.
- d
- The broker says nothing either way. We assume it does not withhold, so that the tax stays yours to settle rather than being reported as already paid.
- e
- Follows from the confirmed rule for brokers established in Belgium. We have not read this broker's own wording on this point.
- Interactive Brokers: DOMAIN.md § 1–2 [CONFIRMED]: brokers established outside Belgium withhold neither the TOB nor the capital-gains tax, and their clients self-declare. Read 2026-08-05.
- Trade Republic: DOMAIN.md § 1–2 [CONFIRMED]: brokers established outside Belgium withhold neither the TOB nor the capital-gains tax, and their clients self-declare. Read 2026-08-05.
- DEGIRO: TOB: tob.tax describes DEGIRO's withholding as optional, investnow.be as automatic — the two disagree and the current default is [VERIFY] in config/tax_be.php. Dividend and certificate: DOMAIN.md § 3 [CONFIRMED] — DEGIRO withholds no Belgian dividend withholding tax and issues no Belgian tax certificate. Capital gains: DOMAIN.md § 1 [CONFIRMED] — DEGIRO does not withhold. Read 2026-08-05.
- BUX: BUX (now "BUX by ABN AMRO: Invest") states itself that it has withheld the TOB since December 2022 and that it does not withhold the Belgian dividend tax; it does not withhold the 2026 capital-gains tax either. Recorded [CONFIRMED] in config/tax_be.php, read 2026-08-05.
- MEXEM: MEXEM states in its own FAQ that it withholds the TOB at source ([CONFIRMED] in config/tax_be.php). It is an Interactive Brokers introducing broker, so its clients export IBKR's files while being taxed differently. On dividends, the capital-gains tax and a Belgian tax certificate it states nothing either way. Read 2026-08-05.
- LYNX: LYNX's own page, updated 11 June 2026, quoted in DOMAIN.md § 1: "LYNX zal werken met het opt-out systeem. Dit betekent dat LYNX de Belgische meerwaardebelasting niet automatisch aan de bron inhoudt." It does withhold the TOB (DOMAIN.md § 2, Belgian brokers list). On dividends, firebelgium.com reports it withholds the TOB on ETFs without withholding the ETF dividend tax; a second source is needed before that flag moves. Corrected 2026-08-05.
- Bolero: DOMAIN.md § 2 [CONFIRMED]: Belgian brokers (Bolero, Keytrade, ING, Belfius Re=Bel, BNP Paribas Fortis, MeDirect, Saxo BE, LYNX BE) withhold the TOB at source. DOMAIN.md § 1 [CONFIRMED]: from June 2026 Belgian intermediaries also withhold the capital-gains tax by default. Read 2026-08-05.

Who is not in this table
Only brokers whose four answers we can trace to a source appear above. Revolut is left out because nothing we have read says where its position comes from; Binance and Kraken because these four columns describe a securities broker and say nothing true about a crypto exchange.

Investing in ETFs as an expat in Belgium: what applies to you and what to check
Yes, an expat living in Belgium can invest in ETFs — and Belgian tax rules then apply just as they do to any resident. Which taxes you meet, what changes when your broker or your account is foreign, and the extra checks that come with a second passport or a plan to move on.

Investing for your child in Belgium: legal usufruct, gifting, and the step-up that does not exist
Most guidance you will find describes a Junior ISA or a custodial account. In Belgium a minor's income lands on the parents' return, and a gifted portfolio carries the donor's acquisition value with it.

Before you buy the 2026 theme ETF: five things that differ on a niche fund
Memory chips, rare earths, space, defence, uranium. On a narrow thematic fund the thing that costs you most is exactly the thing that is least predictable: the TOB rate, the legal form, and the odds the fund closes.
